Description

Day 280
Tali was exhausted, and Elias couldn't blame her. The cold had always sucked away her energy. His wife was strong, and brave, and beautiful, but she was still only human. Their lives had never been easy, but the last several months had been extremely exhausting. It hadn't been a year yet, and CEDA had already failed to keep the plague at bay. On top of that, they failed to keep their safe zones active. Elias still had military contacts, so he knew there were some places holding out. Doolin was doing the best, but a few others places were doing a good job as well.
CEDA had fallen. The government had fallen. Civilization had toppled and was falling. Now, there were only three things Elias trusted. His wife, his daughter, and his gun. The shotgun had never failed him, mostly because he had never failed it.
While his wife offered him peace, and his gun offered him peace, it was really his daughter that made him able to continue. She was a beacon of hope. The world had fallen apart around them, but his daughter couldn't care less. Even after their vehicle had broken down-their third, not counting Elias' truck-all Rachael could talk about was the surroundings.
"We've been to see so much!"
"Yes, we have honey." Tali agreed, fidgeting with the knife in her hand. Tali wasn't a fighter. But Elias had insisted she take some means of self-defense. He had given her his service knife, and a line that his Ranger friend loved; Heroes never die with grey in their hair.
"Daddy, how far do you think we've travelled?" Rachael asked, skipping along as she'd done less than a year ago, on her way to school.
"Well, I'm not sure Rachael..." Elias absent-mindedly scratched at his newly-grown stubble.
"But you're supposed to know!" She stamped her foot, but a smile still creased her lips.
"This old man doesn't know everything, sweety."
"He does know a lot, though." Said Tali, smiling at him. He smiled back, his mind going back to when they were in highschool. He wasn't half the man he was now, but she was every bit of woman. It made him adjust his beret, which had saved him from more fights than his gun had. The majority of civilization still respected military officers. And those that didn't... well, the gun was more than a fixture.
"Where should we go now, Daddy?" Rachael asked, her golden eyes watching him carefully. She was a clever girl, for being only ten.
His hand grazed the wrench; the oversized tool he'd used to kill David, and several other unfortunate Souls in his trip. "Well, I hear Topeka is lovely this time of year..."
